Well the voice on the tape sounds British, and therefore automatically not predisposed to over exclamation. Add to that the fact he is presumably also current or ex military. Even the eventual "oh f**k" seems more like exasperation that he can't get hold of anyone, rather than a reaction to the crash itself.
