Prinz of Dzun,

Thanks for your "Question" and therein lies the irony. The post you are referring to was not a "Question" but a statement. I don't close many threads so it didn't take me long to find. If you scroll down you will see that I did add the comment , "and your question is ?"

This forum is for questions directed at professional Pilots. Those questions may come from from other pilots or indeed anybody else that has a question that can best be answered by a professional pilot. In reality the forum allows questions to be directed to other professional groups within the same arena, For example Air Traffic Controllers, Engineers, etc. There are other forums on PPRuNe that may better serve some questions and in most cases of thread transfer that is the reason.

Most people know what the questions forum is for and a lot of the readers are professionals in aviation who read the posts in order to assist with the answers. By keeping the forum to the point I hope it remains relevant and interesting for those that post and those that read.

I understand that there are many forums on PPRuNe and it is not always obvious where a post best fits. Moderators will always assist by using their experience to move a thread to a more suitable forum if they are able to. Where any real doubt exists the thread usually remains where it is. Other reasons for thread removal are where the poster has seen fit to post in numerous forums. This is wasteful of capacity and given the fact most forums have different moderators may well result in inadvertant deletion from the boards completely. If a thread or post fails to comply with the rules you agreed to when you signed up, or it is deemed contentious within the guidelines to moderators it is transferred to the admin forum where it is reassesed by others. It may then be either removed, edited and returned or returned unedited.

For the moderators it is very time consuming to scan the boards, It is not only necessary to read through the forums that an individual moderates but it is frequently necessary to scan all the major forums to ensure that we are not bouncing threads repeatedly or failing to detect multiple postings of the same thread. Moving, deleting or as in this case answering a point on any thread adds to the workload and is only done if it is felt necessary. I am the first to admit that we don't always get it right. we do make mistakes.

People sometimes get indignant or irritated when their post is edited or moved and I understand that. If it is any consolation of the hundreds of scanned threads in a day very few as a percentage are actually moved or adjusted in any way. In the case of this forum the majority of threads moved are usually moved to "Terms & Endearment" which I also moderate, or to wannabees, private flying, Passengers & SLF or Jetblast as may be appropriate. The vast majority of posts are correctly placed and remain in situ.

Your post was a thread starter. It was not a question. It appeared to be a statement in response to another thread. I couldn't reasonably merge it into the thread it referred to. I tried to think of a better forum for it but as it seemed to be a continuation I couldn't. I therefore added a quick comment and closed it but left it on the forum. I hope this explanation and that of the other moderators satisfies your question specifically and helps you understand the process involved generally.

Answering the rest of your question Danny has always said this is not a democracy and that is quite true. Moderators do not own their forums they act as managers for the owners. We frequently discuss individual threads and the methods we apply in a separate forum. I have no right to do as I please but am entrusted to act in the capacity that the websites owner would wish with specific regard to the conduct of a particular forum including this one.

As far as "good manners" are concerned, I do try and fulfill that criteria wherever possible. I expect other people to use them even though that is frequently not the case with a few of the contributors to this site. unfortunetaly with the need for brevity and the amount of work involved it is not always possible to provide the sort of reply that might be interpreted in that way. If I were to be picky I might suggest that your reply to hugmonster as given above rather falls foul of your own point !

I trust this answers your question in full. If I can be of any further assistance please feel free to ask.
