In the past when I have had 'trouble' with Office installs, I have downloaded the 'remove Office xxx' file from M$. It takes a while to run (in a Dos window) but worth a try. You may have some registry corruption/vestigials which is confusing the install.
How to uninstall Office 2003, Office 2007 or Office 2010 suites if you cannot uninstall it from Control Panel?
