I don't know if that is good news for some Star Alliance members. I'd guess United gives up the not-so profitable routes. Looking at the Latin American members Varig and Mexicana (
Source) I doubt that they are happy to take over the ex-united routes. Both airlines had lay-offs as far as I know.
I could be wrong of course.
