Just a technical clarification to your post, you mention Airbus pilots affair with "...Gaelic automation..." and the resultant "...withering..." skills
I think you mean Gallic....as the Gaelic contribution to aviation excellence was in fact the Irish Concorde (aka Shorts 360) whose automation, I can assure you, was far superior to anything that came out of Toulouse!
