The DESO most definitely included an engine failure with the Recall/Memory Items expected to be known for the engine failure that was given on the downwind leg. Take off from Kai Tak in Cat 1 min at night, back course outbound, vectors, climbing/descending (steep) turns, navaid intercepts..... This was followed by the OEI go-around then normal ILS to land. No FD, no AP, no AT.
We / I hired out a 74Classic sim at our own expense to practice the sim profile provided. We flew power & attitude to achieve performance.
Once upon a time you needed to know how to fly to be a "pilot". Not any more, obviously.
