This is like it used to be when crossing from West to East Berlin in the old days, with a group. You had to hand over a list of all members in alphabetical order (which took some doing in pre-computer days), and then the group all had to stand in a line in the same order. As you can imagine, there was immense scope for errors and being sent to the back of the queue to do it all again.
