natural selection may be one way to look at this issue.

When I fly as SLF, I understand the reason the seatbelt sign is switched on and respect that.

The part of natural selection I'm not impressed about, is when the idiot being selected turns into an unguided missile and selects me too.

Have flown CX and QF, CX service is waay friendlier but I was interested to see the way the seatbelt rule was not enforced by the crew. IMHO it makes a mockery of the concept of a seatbelt sign.
