Seat Belt Signs

What is the point putting them on when they are not enforced by the CC. Numerous times I see passengers walking past CC with the signs on and nothing said. What is the legal requirement to keep the passengers seated? I feel as if it's and a$%e covering exercise on our part but if the CC don't enforce the signs do they open themselves up to possible legal action if the passenger or others get hurt during turbulence?
On other airlines you would not even think about getting up.

Don't be so sure about that.

I have to agree with you but if you want "service" then fly CX, if you want "attitude" then fly Qantas.

Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a middle ground!!

I find it equally annoying when, after telling the cabin crew to be seated in turbulence, it smooths out for a bit and they all decide to get up and resume the service without asking the cockpit crew. Sheesh, do these people have no regard for their own safety???

One of the most annoying things I find is when the sb sign is turned on at 20,000' lots of pax decide to get up and go to the bathroom. I'm not sure if it's still the case, but in QF when the SB sign is turned on, everyone sits down, including Cabin Crew!!

cabin crew are not employed for their intelligence!
Exactly....that's why the less intelligent ones have even become pilots like us

Cabin crew are not enforces. Plus if people want to walk around and risk injury who cares. Live and let live.

paulsalem quote....."Cabin crew are not enforces. Plus if people want to walk around and risk injury who cares. Live and let live"

Pathetic indeed......one of the primary tasks of the flight and cabin crew is safety ...and the enforcement of the rules and regs......
There are many Pax,that refuse to listen or adhere to those rules and requests, but that still does not relieve the crew of their duties........

I have seen it in the many ops Ive flown, and as the Capt there are many things you are able to do,in conjunction with the Cabin crew.....

paulsalems quote is nothing more than ignorance

The US airlines are over the top the other way. Signs almost always left on until top of climb, slightest burble and "bing" go the signs, short sector, signs left on the whole flight regardless of turbulence, basically forcing anyone who needs a lav to defy the sign. I suppose part of that is our American love of a lawsuit for pretty much any reason......

natural selection may be one way to look at this issue.

When I fly as SLF, I understand the reason the seatbelt sign is switched on and respect that.

The part of natural selection I'm not impressed about, is when the idiot being selected turns into an unguided missile and selects me too.

Have flown CX and QF, CX service is waay friendlier but I was interested to see the way the seatbelt rule was not enforced by the crew. IMHO it makes a mockery of the concept of a seatbelt sign.

Agreed

I think we have a misunderstanding of terminology. At the airline I flew for the FAs just informed the pax of the rules and told them how to comply.

"sit down, fasten your seat belt the sign is on"

Enforcement of the regulation only came if the Captain decided to call the police. I've never seen an FA forcibly remove a passenger or forcibly put the person in his set and fasten the belt.

Sadly a lot of US FAs are on a power trip and love telling people what to do.

US airlines

Nothing to do with law suits. The aged CA's in the USA need to sit down as often as possible to rest their arthritic legs and hips.

what are they to do? let the pax p1ss their pants?

Good question. Asked the ISM on my last flight. Reply was that SB sign on is enforced but if a pax insists ongoing to the toilet they are warned that they do so at their own risk. CA's told this by safety school.

I think there is a very small % of CC that enforce or even warn pax about the SB sign. Most of the time it appears that the CC look the other way and pretend not to see the pax. I have even seen pax walking around when the CC have been told to sit down.
Have to agree with gtseraf, I don't want some idiot smacking into me because they wanted to get something out of their carry-on in the over head.

As SLF, I've always thought that the mechanism of letting the CC know they could get up after departure, by bonging the seat belt sign twice, somehow contributes to the whole thing.
Pax hear the bongs, see the seat belt sign flash, see the cabin attendants get up and start their work, and presume they can start wandering around too.
Any other way you can let them know without the "sheep" effect taking over?

I've also often wondered what the message acually was in Cantonese/Mandarin. Its always quite clear in English but its almost as if the thing is so mumbled and short in Canto that the locals don't even (want to) hear or comprehend it!?? Is the message the same???

One idea would be to get rid of this cycling of the belts. When we do it it is not that it is safe for cabin crew but not for pax so whats the point? Why not just turn them off, or better yet leave them in auto?

Sloppy Joe is spot on.

When flying as pax. I HATE the 3 language PA's every time someone decides to put the sign on. Brief em once, keep it on, let people be in charge of their own safety.

most of the time the cc do not seem to budge even when the belts are cycled, so yeah what is the point?

and i have on several occasions during silky smooth flight asked why the belt signs were still on, only to see cc ring the flight deck and bing, belts off. after which a sheepish "they forgot". (at least they were honest and did not come back with some "CAT reported ahead) not blaming or complaining just saying it can happen...
