Mentor was a wise man who looked after Odysseus' son while he was off fighting the Trojan wars.
In the UK we use "mentor" to mean something like a wise adviser.
All this and more is available on Google.
Many Co.s use mentors for those seen as having promotion potential. It is not common in Aviation in the UK, but then Aviation has never been at the leading edge of people management.
