I'm surprised the armed forces don't carry out sexual orientation monitoring, in the same way as they carry out ethnic monitoring. If the representation of gays in the forces is the same as that in the general population, then ten percent of those serving in the armed forces are gay. That means most people serving in the armed forces work alongside someone who is gay.
Of course, if gay men were all painting their nails, knitting cushions and mincing around like John Inman, you wouldn't have any problem spotting them. But, as ever, the truth is less sensational than the media hype.
