From the N VFR Stoney Cross is indeed the usual reporting point. It's a quite large disused runway but the colour changes with the time of year making it harder to see some times than others.
Prior to Stoney Cross, Chilbolton (easily identified by the large dish antenna) is a convenient turning point avoiding Solent and Middle Wallop ATZ, which is often active at weekends.
