I have a Nikon D90, with a variety of lenses. Great piece of kit.
But for "general" use I have a Fujifilm HS10 [10Mp. and a 24-700mm zoom] great camera, the Fuji HS20 is now available (16Mp). Downside is that you have a slight "shutter lag", just like a standard digital. Worth a look, tho'
