drfaust, I am not so sure of your assertion that it is "cheap" to live there.

If you want a decent appartment, rents are not far short of European norm, restaurant prices likewise.

Supermarkets/shopping in general, a little cheaper, but just a "little". Fuel for your car, same as rest of Europe. Nightlife ? slightly cheaper, depending on where you go

It has changed a lot since they became EEC, and will change more for the worse when they finally adopt the € I am sure.

The only thing that hasn't changed is the salaries, the locals in most jobs are earning very little, compared to costs. Most cabin crew for example, were living way out of town and needing to take 2/3 buses trams to get to/from work as they couldn't afford the rent to live anywhere in the centre.
