But that said, I never install updated nVidia drivers these days. Too many things break, and often nothing is fixed.
My recent experience has been the opposite. I don't install nvidia driver updates if everything is running smoothly, but when I've had a video-related problem I have found that installing the latest drivers usually sorts it out.
I would recommend never, ever, ever installing a hardware update from the MS site.
Only install device drivers from the manufacturer's website.
