Sorry, the issue has got split into two threads. This one was really just about Device Manager.
This is the driver Windows Vista and Windows 7 call for during detection and will allow the BlackArmor NAS to be detected properly in device manager. Without this driver you the BlackArmor NAS will show up in Device Manager under "Other Devices" and will show up in the Control Panel – Devices and Printers with an exclamation mark. After installing the driver the BlackArmor NAS should show up in Device Manager under "Disk Drives".
Procedure
1. Download RallyDriver.zip and unzip the file.
2. In the Device Manager under "Other Devices", right-click BlackArmor NAS and choose Update Driver.
3. Update the Driver and browse to the location. Choose the Vista or Windows 7 folder and select the 64 or 32 bit folder. Click Next.
4. When the"Windows can’t verify the publisher of this driver software" message displays, click "Install this driver software anyway".
5. The driver will load. Now the BlackArmor NAS will show properly in Device Manager under Disk Drives.
This granny really has got left behind, but yes, it will work as a network drive if no soft is installed. From what I gather from the instructions above, the software will make it appear as a drive, and theysay, find The NAS in Other Devices, and ask to update drivers. They arrived okay but much of the process was simply not as above. number 4 for instance, just does not apply.
