Interestingly enough; when I came out of Mrs Windsor's Transport Command in 1979, I fancied joining Fred Laker's excellent airline.
I was accepted as an F/O on the DC-10 (at no cost to me) but on a training salary of £4000 pa.
It is my memory that we had to check out on the DC-10 in 12 sectors (mind you, each sector could be at least 10 hours long) or else you were in trouble.
I can well remember that one F/O took more than 12 sectors and who subsequently was not really a wonderful asset to anyone's flight deck but he was very much the exception to the rule.
The interesting thing was that when Fred went down the tubes and all of us were scrabbling for jobs, the one that got job after job was the man mentioned above!
I often wondered what finally happened to him (or his passengers) but he was a classic example of bull**** baffling brains!
