You could try Alec Cornish-Trestrail (Google search gives some details). He designed and built a very good R/C version about 20 years ago. Gas turbine powered and flew (by Paul Leighton) VERY impressively. I seem to remember that he said that he had problems similar to your query re. the boom cross section.
