Yes it's normal and I'm guessing they are trying to start up a new route? a new company? maybe no AOC from the CAA just yet? Aircraft still tech for X reasons?
To be fair if someone has sponsored your rating then you have a bit of an obligation to stick with that company.
If of course you haven't got a temp job and are running out of dosh... I suggest finding something not related to flying to get some cash flow.
