Well, a pilot school was opened there in 1935, with national scheduled services using Ju-52s beginning in 1936. Customs arrived 1946 and it opened to international traffic thereafter. It remained the national and international airport for the city until 1959 when the then military field nearby was upgraded because of space limitations at this airfield. Certainly I recall pilots telling me that they flew there from the UK in the like of Vikings.
