A friend of mine has a JAR PPL but is now no longer able to fly due to a medical condition. If he was to get a NPPL medical declaration form signed by his doctor would he be able to continue to fly but with NPPL restrictions.

LICENCE is due for re-issue at the normal 5 year point. A JAR-FCL Pilot Licence cannot be re-issued without a JAA Medical Certificate, so the licence would be re-issued as a 'lifetime' NPPL.
If so, does he need to inform anyone.
He has 2 options:
Either 1. Maintain his SEP Class Rating exactly as under JAR-FCL. Normal revalidation forms etc. will still be required; or
2. Apply to the CAA (and pay) for a SSEA Class Rating. The advantage of this being that the revalidation requirements are simpler thsn for the SEP Class Rating and can be spread throughout the 24 month validity period.

Incidentally, ORS4 No.711 expires at the end of August 2009. I will be reminding the CAA of the need to re-issue it very shortly!
