I'd like to thank everyone for their helpful replies to my question about Ryanair's additional fees. I guess the shame of it is that while Ryanair may provide service that is reasonably priced in total, its enthusiasm for "hiding the pea" makes travellers feel suspicious and fleeced. It would be so much nicer if the total cost was made clear, up front.
I guess in the mean time it is caveat emptor.
