Online check-in, being free as it was, used to be the incentive to travel with only one item of hand baggage
You weren't able to get away without paying in that scenario either - I booked a flight from Stansted to Dublin last year, and when I selected the hand luggage only option I was upgraded automatically to priority boarding, for which I was charged £5 with no opt-out.
