I was going to ask if you had the right type of Cat 5 cable. Most of the ones sold assume that you are going to plug into a hub/switch. If you want to plug two computers directly together, then you will need a "crossover" cable. You can configure some hubs to do this internally, but I've not (yet) come across a PC card that would do it...
