I am using a Cat 5 cable to link the PCMIA card from the laptop to the Linksys ethernet 10/100LAN card on the desktop.
The desktop is a Tiny Pentium II MMX 500Mghz 125 SDRAM, and the laptop is a Sony Vaio Pentium III 750 Mghz 256 SDRAM. Both running Millenium.
Re 'Time Out', I went to stopwatch the expected download time this morning and up comes various errors suggesting computer restarts.
THe Error Codes were
1 YCOMP4,0,2,3.DLL
2 MSVCRT.DLL
3 Kernel32.DLL
These errors do not always appear, for instance the last attempt no errors appear and the 'Finding Site' 'Opening Site' 'Done' takes 20 Seconds the result again is 'The page cannot displayed' albeit MSN Messenger continues to run ok. Confirming the LAN is working to some extent.
Another clue maybe at the end of the 'Opening Site' text shows I think DNS error, although I cannot be sure as is only displays for a fraction of a second.
