Being "non - bus" I'm probably talking out of line - apologies if I am - but wasn't a failure to retard possibly the prime reason behind the Airbus going off the end at Congonas last year?
edited to add: In any case, floating along at x feet above the runway because the throttles don't close certainly isn't safe either......
