Good news, glad to hear that!
All companies should give some form of special treatment to kids at least until 18. In my company a UM is up to 12, but you can request UM treatment until 17, which is a life saver in cases like this.
About the first flight being canceled, as you say it was not. I checked when you posted the first time, and the flight had only been delayed but had departed.
