Then you're in trouble...... GA is still in it's infancy in Romania.

The national flying school is indeed the one on Baneasa, although they also own the short (bad) grass strip at Strejnic near Ploiesti which they intend to tarmac soon. They have some Cessna singles and a couple of Seneca V's, but as it is a school I guess you ll always need an instructor.

Dorin Ivascu is MD of Baneasa airport and owner of Tuzla, if he can't help you few others will be able to. He is a most likable chap and very well connected.

The Romanian AOPA is small but a few good enthousistic members, perhaps you can hitch a ride with a few, but renting,..... i don't think so.

Anyway, Romanian airspace is very restricted as it is controlled by the military. Certainly on foreign registered airplanes you need to apply to the Romanian CAA at least 48 hours before any VFR flight, incl copies of CofA (CAA Romania Mihaela Rotariu, 021 2081530,fax 021 2081583 email ops [email protected] ), insurance and intended route, and they make you fly low level, not sure how this applies to Romanian registered airplanes with a foreign license.

There are no current legal VFR maps and the romanian VFR AIP is incomplete.

You could also try the national aero club in Bucharest 021 3123619, who got me some MOD VFR maps.

My guess would be that you find a plane with a romanian safety pilot, perhaps IFR rated (Dorin will be able to help you, ask for Vali, who is also a part time instructor at the national flying school) and still enjoy the flying.

Vali will let you pilot the plane but it makes life a lot easier doing it that way.

Let me know how you got on!
