This theme appears on the Rumours and News forum with regular monotony and generally achieves the same response as it is doing here. The discriminator appears to be age and experience, but that too, is a sweeping generalization.

With experience comes the realization that being a pilot is a tremendous opportunity to do something the majority of people will never get to do. The selection process for Military pilots has the unintended side affect of allowing some people to believe their own publicity, but most are grateful for the chance to do something both fun and rewarding. I like to believe that very few Military pilots fail to understand that every hour spent at the sharp end is the result of many, many, hours of dedicated professionalism by all those support personnel in the background. My personal experience has been that those who do understand the scale of the teamwork involved are far less likely to feel the need to announce their aircrew status, those that don't will be flashing the Breitling and Ray-Ban Aviators for evermore.

There are always good times to announce your flying credentials, and of course bad times. Good times may include overhearing the Chief Bridesmaid announcing she's not going home until she's banged a pilot, bad times include when the Crew Chief comes in at 4pm on a Friday afternoon looking for a 2 hour ground run. A true aviation professional will step up to both tasks with good grace and a winning smile. It's like leadership, if you need to tell people you are in charge, you're probably not in charge at all.
