Three injured as charter plane crashes

SMH September 7, 2008 - 8:02PM

Three people suffered minor injuries when a their scenic flight crashed near Darwin.

A Cessna carrying four passengers lost power at more than 800 metres shortly before the pilot began preparing to land at Darwin airport about 3.10pm (CST), Northern Territory police said.

The pilot tried to make an emergency landing on Whitewood Road at Howard Springs, about 25km south-east of the city, but the plane struck powerlines and crashed as it coasted to the ground.

Three passengers - a man, 88, and two women, 26 and 63 - were taken by ambulance to the Royal Darwin Hospital.

Another passenger, a 38-year-old man, and the pilot, 40, were taken to hospital as a precaution.

"It is understood the plane was chartered for a scenic flight and had taken off from Cooinda at 2.30pm," police said.

Crews are working to restore electricity to the area.
