Plane down in darwin

I was just flicking through the channels before on ABC in the NT and caught the last few secs of a story on what appeared to be a C210 down in Darwin today. Anyone got any details? Is everyone ok? Anyone know who the operator is?

I'm going to answer my own question

Three injured as charter plane crashes

SMH September 7, 2008 - 8:02PM

Three people suffered minor injuries when a their scenic flight crashed near Darwin.

A Cessna carrying four passengers lost power at more than 800 metres shortly before the pilot began preparing to land at Darwin airport about 3.10pm (CST), Northern Territory police said.

The pilot tried to make an emergency landing on Whitewood Road at Howard Springs, about 25km south-east of the city, but the plane struck powerlines and crashed as it coasted to the ground.

Three passengers - a man, 88, and two women, 26 and 63 - were taken by ambulance to the Royal Darwin Hospital.

Another passenger, a 38-year-old man, and the pilot, 40, were taken to hospital as a precaution.

"It is understood the plane was chartered for a scenic flight and had taken off from Cooinda at 2.30pm," police said.

Crews are working to restore electricity to the area.

Yeah, quick, lets close Darwin Airport... Surely it now beats Essendon for the being the worst airport in 'recent history' for air disasters. Lets make a lobby group, get an MP and a website, tell the residents. Oh the noise is too much...

On a serious note good to hear that all survived and they are not too bad.

Reports incomplete...

Hasselhof,

You obviously missed the sentence at the end of the report you quote:

"It is understood that the pilot of the doomed aircraft once mentioned an interest in becoming a commercial pilot and flying for QANTAS. QANTAS has had a string of incidents over recent months ..."

I can hardly believe it but this informative, rational and non-sensational news report is from the NT News.

PLANE CRASHES ON ROAD

by Ben Langford
September 8th, 2008

FIVE people walked away from a plane crash after the pilot made an amazing emergency landing on a Territory road yesterday.

The Barrier Air charter plane experienced engine failure at 2500 feet, police said.

The 40-year-old pilot tried to bring the single-engine Cessna down to land on Whitewood Rd at Howard Springs about 3.10pm.

He almost made it - but the plane clipped powerlines and crashed into an electricity pole and a wire mesh fence.

The pilot and four passengers climbed out of the wreckage and were assisted by the family whose house they crashed outside.

Police said the passengers were a man aged 87 and his 62-year-old wife, a 38-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman. The older man and both women suffered minor injuries and all five were taken to Royal Darwin.

All were described as being in a satisfactory condition last night.

Sandra Lay's young brother and sister were playing in a bird aviary less than 100m from where the plane crash-landed.

"The power went out and I heard this big screeching and a crash," Ms Lay said. "I came out and they were sitting there. The pilot was leading them out of the plane.

"We called them inside to sit in the shade and wait for the ambulance."

The plane's body was doubled over from the impact with the pole and a powerline wrapped around its wing.

Palmerston fire brigade acting station officer Aaron Perry praised the pilot, who had 23 years' experience, for bringing his passengers down to safety.

"He's done a pretty good job to avoid any injuries," he said.

It is understood the plane was chartered for a scenic flight and had taken off from Cooinda in Kakadu National Park about 2.30pm.

Fire crews attended the crash scene.

The Civil Aviation Safety Authority will investigate the crash.

Very glad to hear that all are safe and unhurt. Well done

Gee those power lines do some damage don't they? They look so unassuming, I'm always amazed at what they can do. I always imagined that I'd be able to see and avoid them but if statistics are to be believed if they're there I'll probably hit them.

To the pahlut, Well done! A friend of mine heard you on the radio and said you sounded cool and collected.

(Damn those powerlines.)

Tut Tut Horatio.....

Mr 'H',
You, in turn, failed to complete the report that,

'it was only a technical problem, and as QANTAS has never had a 'hull loss' it is expected that this aircraft will be repaired and back in the air soon......'

Good luck they all walked away.

Pity about the 210 though......

Any idea of the rego?? Just curious is all - having flown many of them over the years....quite a few years ago now.....

Good work ruined by bad luck with the lines!

I am glad all walked away from this one. Looking at the wreck it must have been a miracle. Job well done pilot! Bloody powerlines! (i did not know NT had electricity )

You folks better stop bending airplanes or soon we will be all out of flying jobs. It has been just too many lately.

Lucky they got the aircraft down and nobody got electrocuted!
Brilliant job, pilot.

Impressive of the pilot to somehow end up with what seems like just a cabin left of the aircraft.

Qantas myth

To EX SFO GRIFFO, sorry mate. The Qantas myth lives on. They have suffered total hull losses and loss of life in the pre-jet era. They can justly claim to have never lost a jet hull, although they tried hard to at Bangkok with a B747-400.

Maybe all these observations will end up being connected???

It was a long way from Coinder though so maybe not. He was nearly home by the looks of it.

Prospecter I would never suggest such a thing

But you might be a very good player of join the dots

I hope for the pilots sake it was a genuine engine failure.

I hear a story of old racing driver Pete Geoghan who having retired his car from a race at Bathurst, was asked by the media about the reason for the failure, he said it was an electrical problem, the reporter asked was it? Looked more serious than that. He said yeah it was, the alternator failed after being knocked of its mounts by a conrod!

Not the first plane to land on a road out that way from memory.

A 210 can carry a ****e load of fuel although it has been many moons. 5 pob and tabs = what around 4.5 hours of flying?

Framer, it's "Cooinda", not "Coinder".

And how long ago are you talking with the fuel? I know Kakair have drum fuel down there, but that's only for their own use.
