You had to attend the briefing (either in person or someone on your behalf) if you wanted to use the
heliport. This was an entirely sensible 'restriction' considering the entry and exit routes and the fact that the heliport was still operational during the displays.
Did you try asking to use the main runway whilst the displays were on?
