The NCL-BRS route is by a considerable margin the most popular air route between two English provincial cities in terms of numbers of passengers flown.

It has been since 2004 with around a quarter of a million travelling annually in each of 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007.

All this despite a rail frequency of two direct departures an hour in both directions for much of the day, something that has also obtained for a number of years.

However, 2008 is not looking so good. In the first four months of the year passenger numbers are down by around 15,000 compared to the same period in 2007.
