I'm surprised no-one has mentioned 'Sagittarious Rising' by Cecil Lewis. This is a marvelously evocative autobiographical account of flying on the Western Front during WW1. Cecil Lewis went on to fly in China, and helped form the BBC in the early 20's. This book is out in paperback here in the UK, and is highly recommended.
