pressure pattern navigation in the old days was about comparing an accurate radio altimeter height with the pressure, and using that information to calculate the aircraft drift in overwater navigation. That way you get to your destination (by altering the heading to account for drift) even if the arrival time may be out be some time. Hence the pressure pattern scales on the Jeppesen CRP flight calculators.
