Don't know what flight you were on but you must have been unlucky, I have transited through BGR many times in with numerous UK charter airlines in late 80's & early 90's. All stops required a madatory deplane whilst refuel in progress, always dumped in a transit lounge for c. 45min - 1 Hour then back on board & off ! Incidentally also same situation was experienced at Gander.
Ahh, those were the days. It was so funny in those early days seeing Florida bound pax walking across the frozen runway in Gander wearing T-shirts and shorts, as they were not pre-warned what Gander was like.
