Dundee and North Sea Oil

Hi,

I agree that the airport in Aberdeen was a factor in the growth of that city as an oil centre but additionally Dundee was a victim of geography.

In the early days offshore activity was fairly equidistant from the ports of Dundee, Montrose, Aberdeen and Peterhead e.g. Argyll, Auk...

BP, Conoco, Ranger, etc all used Dundee in those early days.

As major discoveries started to be found further north - and with increasing fuel costs and travelling time for support operations - onshore base operations naturally followed them north.

It then became difficult to justify shipping goods south by road to Dundee/Montrose and then sailing them north again past Aberdeen & Peterhead.

As time went on fewer and fewer support operations remained in Dundee making the use of the port even less economic for mud companies, etc.

Regards

Jim
