Air India hub in Munich soon
Wednesday January 30 2008 01:56 IST

T'PURAM: As part of its ongoing expansions, the Air India is planning to set up a hub in Europe.

‘‘The hub is being planned at Munich airport in Germany and airport authorities have already offered the space. The plan is to fly about ten flights to the hub from various Indian airports daily evening. Connection flights will be operated to various European and American destinations from the hub,’’ said Air India Chairman and Managing Director V Thulasidas in an interview with the this website's News Paper.

‘‘One of the daily flights to the hub would be from an airport in Kerala. The name of the airport would not be disclosed at this point of time, ’’he said.

Air India is also in the process of entering into global alliance with Star Alliance and it is expected to be completed by March. Once it is complete, any passenger buying an Air India ticket will be able to fly in any of the airlines in the network.

At present there are about 21 airlines in the Star Alliance network. ‘‘Air India is the only Indian carrier to become part of a global network.

The network of the airline will get wider with the alliance, and passengers flying in any of the airlines in the network will get the frequent flier benefit.

Such factors would attract more passengers to the national carrier, ’’ Thulasidas said.

He also said that Air India will commence a new direct service to New York from New Delhi from February 8. It had recently commenced a new service from Mumbai to New York.

Bringing cheers to the air travellers from the state capital, he said that Thiruvananthapuram would be soon made a base of Air India with some of the flights being stationed here.

The crew of the flight operating from Thiruvananthapuram would also be stationed in Thiruvananthapuram
