My understanding though, is that it can be a problem to fly PFA / LAA permit aircraft outside of the UK and that specific authorization is needed from the country concerned so you might have a problem if you want to take it home.

First check whether the type is 'approved' in the UK by the PFA/LAA. If it is then half the battle is won.
If it is approved, then the issue will be whether the build standard meets the PFA requirements. This means a thorough inspection including cutting holes if required to inspect hidden parts of the structure.
