Westwinds in Pelair

Pelair currently has 6 Westwind 1's - knu kns ajp ajj ajg ajv, and 2 Westind 2's - nga knr.

Two freighters and 1 multi-role medicac aircraft are based in Darwin. The freighers both do the night runs from Darwin to ML via Alice return, 4 nights a week(mon - thurs). A pilot based there could expect to do 2 nights per week on the freight run (approx 10 hours per night flight time)plus perhaps a medivac/charter. Obviously Pelair works on a Faid system.

The other Westinds are based between Sydney and Nowra on a floating basis depending on demand. The Navy uses them along with the Lear 35/36's to service the contract they have with Pelair. A sydney based pilot on the Westwind will fly medivac's (mostly international, throughout the pacific, Asia and indonesia), VIP charter, and some freight. This basing used to be the hardest to get, but then people realised the lifestyle that the Darwin base offered due to the more reliable rostering. Take your pick now.

The Westwind is a great plane to fly, the work is varied and interesting and it is extremely good experience -plus it is fun. You could get sent to a god-forsaken island in the middle of the ocean at 3 in the morning to rescue a half dead person, with 2 hours to be airborne. It is rewarding and challenging. You will not find another jet job in Australia where you will get to fly a corporate jet the way Pelair does. Hard and fast. As far as command goes, it could be as little as a few months if you can fly and they need Captains. It is entirely merit based as it should be. You will need to be good, the training is full on.

Downsides - Money and rostering. However this depends on your point of view I guess. They pay the award and only the award. Staffing affects the rostering of course, plus you will be on standby in Sydney a fair bit due to the type of work.

I can highly recommend the job. Getting them to return your calls is probably the biggest hurdle! Keep trying if you are interested. Now that Rex has taken over they are a little more insistent on the experience requirements. It used to be a bit more relaxed. But don't be discouraged if you are a bit short.

The Westwind and Metro divisions are like oil and water and don't mix - due to management clashes which is a shame. It is VERY hard to transfer from Metro to Westwind. Can be done though.
