World War II stories.....
Re "The Numbers" from The Shue
When I worked in DXB from 1990 to '95 we used to do all the arrivals/departures for SHJ as well as DXB, is this still the case? In those days we just had 1 ATCO in the tower (with 1 assistant - is Phillip still there?) and 1 ATCO on APP RADAR (also with an assistant). Single runway most of the time, with the odd busy hour of 35 to 40 movements. On doggo's we worked 2 hours on Radar, 2 hours break, 2 hours tower and 2 hours break (or a mix of these). Worked hard at times, however I used to get 13,500 DHS a month, and most of the accom was either Deira Tower or the 100 villas on the beach at Jebel Ali! Still have good friends from those days. Mind you, I think Dubai was a much more pleasant "backwater" in those days than it has turned out to be. Wasn't too many Aussies there then, generally only about 3 of us. C'arn the Wallabies...I watched the '91 World cup win (by Wallabies of course) at the old Ski club on Deira Creek.....haven't seen too much of the "Bleks" since then!!
