Plenty of instructors who freelance but generally on peoples own aircraft for check outs, bi annuals, IMC, aeros etc. Irv Lee at Popham I think is one of the few full time who work like this, others such as myself only do it part time and often freelance for a school some of the time as well. I normally charge £24/hr plus travelling which I think is par for the course (travelling of course being offset able for tax).
