It reminds me that in the US of A, many railroad companies on their engines both steam and diesel had 2 headlights, one fixed on the right of way, the other that oscillated, ostensibly one imagines for the same reason that these occult, in order to be distinguishable from afar.
The bird strike thing though sounds a bit dodgy expecting birds to fly in a straight line, but one would imagine the approching decibels would spook em?
