I would highly recommend that you attend Vet school as opposed to spending a dime on an aviation career. This industry is absolutely horrible and I can't recommend it to anybody! Spent 8 years in the Air Force(wish I'd never gotten out), hired at Peidmont Airlines in Jan 1989 and spent the next 13 years sitting bottom reserve FO for USairways. Had a block of time for a year. Furloughed starting my 15 years. Lost my pension after USair went into bankruptcy for the second time in 2 years. Got hired flying DC-10's for Gemini at 35K a year. Resigned and went to Polar to fly the 747 classic. Fired963 of us) after the pilots went on strike. Rehired when it was settled. Furloughed 6 months later. Went to work for EOS flying 757's out of JFK. Schedule absolutely was horrible if you commute. On 3 off 2. Try to have a life if you commute. reinstated at Polar after a judge said we should never have been furloughed. Suspended from Polar when I didn't resign from EOS fast enough and TSA caught that I had 2 airline ID's. (couldn't resign as I was doing military duty) Finally resigned from EOS and heading for 747-400 school in DEN for Polar. Rumours already abound that ATlas will be making Polar furlough by the fall. All this for a measily 52K a year. Like I said "Go to vet school and save your money"
The only good jobs are SWA and Fedx but good luck with that.
So after 26 years of flying, 8 type ratings and 11000 hours I will still be bottom 747-400 F/O living in Maine and based in LA. It just keeps getting better. I never thought going back to US air would look like a good option to me while all my friends still flying there advise me not to come back yet as its still a horrible place to work.
Play the lottery, keep your fingers crossed, marry rich (not Rich the Flight Attendent), inherit $$$$ or rob banks but don't spend your money learning to fly unless you really dislike life! Sou8nds bad I know but it is reality. Good luck with your decision and if ya do fly...start getting to know as many FedX pilots as you can and pray they hire you. (I got turned down last year there)
Cheers
