This probably a load of bolleaux but - years ago Pilot License No 1 explained to me that, if a distant aircraft appeared above the horizon, then he was above you. If it appeared below the horizon, then he was below you. Does it work? I suppose it does - when you think about it. Only downside - you need to see the horizon.
