SAA use A340-600s to DC, and A340-300s to NYC. They are actually much, much better to fly on nowadays - the airline has pulled out a couple of rows of seats in economy and increased the seat pitch to 33inches (from 31inches). At the mo, Delta offer 31 - 32 inches. One of the positive spin offs of reducing weight by removing seats is that the return flights (US - SA) can now go non-stop and SAA are planning on implementing this soon. So, nonstop and more legroom should make the whole experience a lot better than going via Europe
