I think everyone may have missed the point that the Captain wouldn't have made the decision on his own - Operations Control would have had the final say on where the aircraft went.
IF the Captain has been stood down (unlikely) then I would hope that whoever was in Operations Control & had the final say has also been treated in a similar fashion...
As it stands, from what i have heard around the traps, it is most likely a case of ops managers being upset at things spiralling out of control, and actually having to try to use some 'man management skills' to get the situation back under control - skills which they appear not to have....
