Unfortunately, it's not a Virgin requirement that you have 5 years of references, it's for your BAA pass so that you can actually work at the airport.
There must be something that you/ they can do to make sure you have enough references etc but be warned, when I started at my airline (not VAA) there was a girl on my course who passed all her exams, got her wings and was then 'let go' by the company because they couldn't contact all her references!
I know I sound like the bearer of doom and gloom but if it was me, I would much rather be properly informed before getting my hopes up! (sorry )
