Sounds like a dodgy drive (assuming it happens with various DVDs - not just with a single dodgy DVD?).
Have you tried cleaning the laser lens with a commercially available cleaning kit? Generally consists of squirting some liquid onto a special DVD shaped thing (sorry to be so technical
) and pressing Play!
