Minor correction only... commuting does count towards duty time, but not fight duty.

The pay and sector pay you are on at the moment was negotiated by the pilots. (Although, a review is now over due.) There are plenty of other airlines that would pay you per block, if that's the sort of deal you are looking for, although I don't know of any that would pay per mile. Maybe someone else could help you out there.
